The 2023/24 academic year confirmed the active involvement of UNISA students in international exchange programmes, both incoming and outgoing. This provided an insight into academic trends, popular destinations and gender distribution. Thanks to data received from UNISA’s International Office, two detailed mobility datasets have been published:

Incoming students: a strong presence from Spain and Germany
A total of 475 students chose UNISA as their Erasmus+ destination, with the majority coming from Spain (279), followed by Germany (43) and Poland (29). There are slightly more female students (187) than male students (148).

The majority of students were enrolled on Bachelor’s programmes (401), followed by Master’s programmes (70) and PhD programmes (4). The most popular fields of study were:

  • Business and Administration – 52 students
  • Law – 43 students
  • Political Science and Civics – 23 students
  • ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) – 21 students

Other areas of study that attracted significant interest included Pharmacy, Sociology, Medicine and Languages.

Outgoing students: a variety of destinations
UNISA sent 324 students abroad, mainly to Spain (179), followed by Germany (43) and France (37). There were slightly more Master’s students (166) than Bachelor’s students (155), and the gender distribution was similar to that of incoming students.

The most popular fields of study for outgoing students included:

  • Computer Science and Engineering – 38 students
  • Business Management – 25 students
  • Medicine and Surgery – 25 students
  • Foreign Languages and Cultures – 42 students
  • Communication Sciences and Primary Teacher Education – 13 students each

Trends and Outlook
Data from 2023/24 reveals a dynamic and balanced exchange ecosystem, characterised by robust bilateral ties, particularly with Spain and Germany. The growing popularity of interdisciplinary subjects with a focus on languages and technology reflects the evolving priorities of students and the increasingly international profile of UNISA.
