What is the label HRS4R?

December 1, 2024

In the world of research, institutions are increasingly asked to demonstrate not only scientific excellence but also a commitment to fair and supportive working conditions. One key recognition in this area is the HRS4R label, short for Human Resources Strategy for Researchers.

The HRS4R label is awarded by the European Commission to universities, research centers and organizations that align their policies with the 20 principles of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. These principles cover aspects such as transparent recruitment, professional development, ethical standards and equal opportunities and are classified under the following four pillars: Ethics, Integrity, Gender and Open Science; Researchers’ Assessment, Recruitment and Progression; Working Conditions and Practices; Research Careers and Talent Development.

Earning the label means that an institution has gone through a structured and monitored auditing mechanism, centred on a continuous assessment in three-years cycles based on gap-analysis and action plans. For researchers, this recognition signals a positive environment where careers are supported, diversity is valued, and research integrity is promoted. For institutions, it boosts visibility and competitiveness in attracting international talent.

In short, the HRS4R label is a commitment to making research careers in Europe more sustainable, fair, and appealing.

In Italy, at present 21 universities hold the HR Excellence in Research award, among which:

  • Politecnico di Torino
  • Politecnico di Milano
  • Università di Macerata
  • Università di Bologna
  • Università degli Studi di Siena
