In June 2024, Milestone 52 (9.3) under Work Package 9 – Digital Transformation marked the successful launch of the NEOLAiA Digital Identity Mechanism, establishing a shared framework for secure and federated access across the alliance’s digital platforms.
The mechanism was developed to ensure efficient, safe, and distributed authentication, taking into account the IT tools and infrastructures implemented in other Work Packages. It identifies the most effective solution for managing digital identities through eduGAIN, the international federation interconnecting academic and research institutions worldwide.
The University of Salerno (UNISA) played a key role in designing and testing the system, leading the implementation of the distributed authentication mechanism and validating it through the NEOLAiA Virtual Café, the first platform integrated within this identity framework.
This milestone represents a significant step toward a unified digital ecosystem for NEOLAiA, enabling secure and seamless access to shared platforms — from the Virtual Café to upcoming micro-credential systems — and strengthening the alliance’s commitment to building a truly interconnected European university.
