The NEOLAiA Language Policy Charter, adopted in February 2025, marks a new milestone towards building a truly multilingual European university. Developed within Work Package 7, the Charter is the natural follow-up to the White Paper released in June 2024.

While the White Paper identified the main challenges of internationalisation and proposed three strategic pillars (accreditation, training, incentives), the Charter translates this vision into shared principles and operational recommendations for the entire alliance.

The contents were first outlined during the face-to-face meeting in Tours (October 2024) and finalised in the following months. Each partner university has since translated the Charter into its national language: the University of Salerno (UNISA), like the other institutions, prepared the Italian version to ensure dissemination within the academic community.

The Charter is based on five key principles: inclusion and recognition of language competences, promotion of multilingualism and cultural awareness, balanced development of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI), strengthening intercultural and plurilingual experiences, and establishing a harmonised system for staff accreditation.

Compared to the more analytical and strategic White Paper, the Charter has a normative and operational character, offering concrete guidelines and recommendations for implementing common language policies across the alliance.

With this document, NEOLAiA reaffirms its commitment to fostering academic excellence, diversity, inclusion, and international cooperation through language.
