European University Alliances are transnational collaborations between higher education institutions across Europe. They are part of the European Universities Initiative, launched by the European Commission to strengthen strategic partnerships between universities and to promote a unified European education area. The main objectives of these alliances include promoting student and staff mobility, fostering joint research and innovation and developing interdisciplinary education programs that address global challenges.

By breaking down barriers between institutions, European University Alliances create a more integrated and inclusive higher education system. They enable students to study across multiple campuses, offer researchers opportunities for cross-border collaboration, and support the development of innovative teaching methods. Today, there are 50 European University Alliances, involving hundreds of universities across the continent.

Open Data for transparency and accessibility

To promote transparency and accessibility of information on European University Alliances, the UNISA WP8 team has developed and published two open datasets on the NEOLAiA Open Data Repository:

  1. European Universities Alliances: this dataset provides an open and accessible list of all European University Alliances. By making this information publicly available, we aim to facilitate transparency in higher education cooperation and ensure that students, academics, researchers, policymakers and the general public have easy access to details about these alliances. Open data in this context promotes informed decision-making, awareness and engagement with the opportunities that these alliances offer for higher education and research in Europe.

  1. Universities of the European Alliances: this dataset contains a comprehensive list of all 452 universities that are members of the 50 European University Alliances. By making this information open, we contribute to a more transparent education system, allowing institutions and stakeholders to better understand and navigate the landscape of European higher education networks.

Through initiatives like these, we are reinforcing the importance of data accessibility in shaping the future of education and collaboration in Europe.
